Classic car insurance

Agreed-value coverage for numbers-matching classics, restored muscle cars, vintage imports and modern collectibles. The Policy Shopper compares the leading collector-car carriers so your car is insured for what it's really worth.

Why it matters

Classics don't depreciate like normal cars

A standard auto policy assumes your car loses value every year. Many classics do the opposite. When a standard policy pays actual cash value after a total loss, the check may not reflect the car's real market value, the years of restoration or the parts that are hard to find.

Classic car insurance is usually written on an agreed value: you and the carrier settle on the number when the policy starts, and that is what's paid if the car is a total loss. Because collector cars are driven less and stored carefully, coverage is often priced accordingly.

Coverage

What classic car coverage can include

  • Agreed value. Locked in up front, with no depreciation applied at claim time.
  • Flexible mileage. Plans built around shows, club runs and weekend drives.
  • Restoration in progress. Coverage for project cars while work is underway, from carriers that offer it.
  • Spare parts. Protection for parts and accessories you keep for the car.
  • Multi-vehicle programs. One program for a whole garage, often with discounts.
  • Collector-car claims. Carriers that understand originality, specialists and rare parts.

Features, limits and eligibility vary by carrier, state and vehicle, and all coverage is subject to underwriting approval.

FAQ

Classic car insurance questions

What counts as a classic car for insurance?

There is no single definition. Many collector carriers look at cars roughly 20 to 25 years old or older, but modern limited-production and collectible cars can qualify too. Eligibility depends on the carrier, the car, its condition and how it is used.

Is classic car insurance cheaper than regular auto insurance?

It often can be, because collector policies are priced for cars that are driven less and well cared for. Your actual premium depends on the car, its value, where it is kept, your driving record and the carrier.

Are there mileage limits on classic car policies?

Many classic car policies limit annual miles or offer tiered mileage plans, and some carriers are more flexible than others. Tell us how often you drive and we will find a plan that fits.

Does my classic need to be garaged?

Most collector carriers require the car to be stored in a fully enclosed, locked structure such as a private garage or storage facility. Requirements vary by carrier.

Can I insure a car that is being restored?

Yes. Several carriers offer restoration-in-progress coverage, and some let the coverage amount grow as work is completed. Spare parts coverage is also available from some carriers.

Do I need another car for daily driving?

Most classic car policies are for pleasure use and ask that you have another vehicle for everyday driving. If your classic is your daily car, we can look at other options.

General information only. Coverage depends on the carrier, your state and the policy terms.
